What To Expect When You Get Veneers

Posted on

A veneer is a thin crown that is adhered to the front of your teeth. The reasons to receive this treatment are many. For example, if you have discolored teeth, and you have tried bleaching with poor results, you might consider having your color enhanced with crowns. However, before you go in to have veneers adhered to your teeth, you should do some investigating to find out whether you are a good candidate and whether your dentist is experienced in applying veneers.

What Makes You a Good Candidate for Veneers

Veneers will not work for everyone, and your dentist will need to evaluate your teeth to determine whether they are right for you. Tooth position can affect the look of veneers. For example, if your teeth are too close, too crooked, or too out of position, veneers are not the right choice for you. Instead, you will likely need braces to prepare your teeth before you can even consider veneers. Another factor is whether or not you grind your teeth. While the cement used to adhere veneers should last for ten years, grinding can chip away at the porcelain in the veneers or even cause the cement to fail.

What to Expect from Your Dentist

Experience is key to performing the preparations necessary for successful veneers. For example, a dentist who uses the wrong hemostatic treatment could create stains that show through your veneers. While dental science has advanced greatly in past years, experience is still invaluable. Look for a dentist with thorough training in cosmetic dentistry and years of solid experience.

A good dentist will also work with a good lab. There is no foolproof machine that a dentist can use to churn out flawless veneers. Instead, your dentist will have to send impressions of your teeth to a lab. Poorly executed veneers will undermine rather than enhance your smile and may even cause bite problems. Thus, you need to look for a dentist who has been performing veneers for years with good results.

Before you commit to receiving veneers from a dentist, do some investigating. Make sure that the dentist you choose does an investigation of your mouth. Any dentist who nonchalantly approves you for receiving veneers should send up a red flag. On the other hand, a dentist who takes the time to evaluate your mouth and is willing to turn down your request for veneers if you do not qualify should be someone you trust.
